My Favorite Fabric Base

My Favorite Fabric Base

One of the questions I get asked a lot is what is my favorite bases to work with. Definitely waterproof canvas. Oxford waterproof canvas has so many sewing benefit's.

Let's first start off with what is waterproof canvas. Oxford canvas is a type of fabric that is woven in a basketweave pattern, which gives it a unique texture and strength. Originally developed in the late 19th century for outdoor gear, the term "Oxford" refers to the style of weave rather than a specific material. The waterproof variant is treated with coatings or finishes that enhance its resistance to moisture.

Oxford waterproof canvas comes in different weights referred to as denier. The higher the denier the heavier weight it is. The highest weight being 600 and the lowest is 120. The denier we carry at Nerdartistry is 420.

What makes it my favorite base to work with. Well first and foremost, you don't have to interface it. Yes, i'll say that again. You don't have to interface our waterproof canvas. This is a huge time saver and cost saver. Next, I would have to say it's durability. Because this fabric was designed for outdoor use, it can stand up to a lot of wear and tear. Lastly, it's waterproof! This makes clean ups and accidental spills a breeze! I recently gifted a teacher's tote to my mom. She called me and said she accidentally spilled her water bottle and wanted to know how to clean it. I said take a paper towel and wipe it up and take a hair drier and blow it dry. She said that's it. I said yup. Easy peasy.

What makes Nerdartistry Oxford waterproof canvas stand out from other brands. You can iron it. Yes you can iron Nerdartistry waterproof canvas. Our waterproof canvas doesn't have a thick plastic coating on the back. Instead it has a thin PU coating bonded to the weaves. Making it great for those sewing on a domestic machine or bags with several layers.
