Fabric Base Information

All of the bases at Nerdartistry have been throughly tested before offering it to our customers. Here is a list of our bases, their GSM weight, width of fabric, care instructions and common uses. 

All of our fabric is dyed using Oeko-Tex certified ink. Meaning the ink isn't harmful to humans or animals. 

If you are pre-washing our fabric, wash it with no soap or anything that may alter the color of the fabric such as but not limited to bleach and built in stain removers. Some of our bases CAN NOT be washed. Please read the base description to see if it is base can be washed in the washer.

Cotton Woven

Our cotton woven is 100% cotton. It has a weight of 150 GSM. One yard is 59" wide by 36" long. Our cotton woven is great for bags, clothes and any other crafts that uses cotton woven fabric. Our cotton woven fabric isn't a pre-shrunk fabric. If you are making anything where the end product is going to be washed or dried, we recommend washing and drying it on the temperature setting before you cut out your pattern pieces and start sewing. If you are using our cotton woven fabric for bags, it's not necessary to wash the fabric before hand. However, we do recommend ironing it on the cotton setting with steam. This will prevent the fabric from shrinking when you interface it. 

Cotton Lycra

Our cotton lycra is 95% cotton and 5% spandex. It has a weight of 250 GSM. One yard is 59" wide by 36" long. Our cotton Lycra is great for making clothes, stuffies and bags. Our cotton lycra isn't a pre-shrunk fabric. If you are making anything where the end product is going to be washed or dried, we recommend washing and drying it on the temperature setting before you cut out your pattern pieces and start sewing. If you are using our cotton lycra fabric for bags, it's not necessary to wash the fabric before hand. However, we do recommend ironing it on the cotton setting with steam with a pressing cloth or teflon iron sheet over it. This will prevent the fabric from shrinking when you interface it. 

Waterproof Canvas

Our waterproof Canvas is 100% polyester. It is a 600 denier and has a weight of 220 GSM. Our waterproof canvas is great for domestics and anyone making things with several layers. It doesn't have the thick plastic coating on the back like some other brands have. Instead it has a waterproof coating on it. Our waterproof canvas CAN NOT be put in the washer or drier. Spot clean with a damp cloth. Do not use bleach or any other chemicals that may alter the colors. Our waterproof canvas is very popular with bag makers because it doesn't require SF101 interfacing like woven, canvas and lycra does. Our waterproof canvas can be ironed with steam with a pressing cloth of teflon sheet over it. VERY IMPORTANT: You must keep your iron moving. Do Not keep the iron in one place too long or it will warp. 

Cotton Canvas

Our cotton canvas is 100% cotton. It has a weight of 250 GSM. Our cotton canvas is a thicker weight canvas. One yard is 59" wide by 36" long. Our cotton canvas is great for bags, clothes and any other crafts that uses cotton canvas fabric. Our cotton canvas fabric isn't a pre-shrunk fabric. If you are making anything where the end product is going to be washed or dried, we recommend washing and drying it on the temperature setting before you cut out your pattern pieces and start sewing. If you are using our cotton canvas fabric for bags, it's not necessary to wash the fabric before hand. However, we do recommend ironing it on the cotton setting with steam. This will prevent the fabric from shrinking when you interface it. 

Glow in the Dark Vinyl

Both our printed and solid glow in the dark vinyl is 1 mm thick. It is sold by the half yard. All vinyl comes pre-cut from our supplier. If you order more than 1 it will come pre-cut in half yards. A half yard is 54" wide by 18" long. It is a soft vinyl with a woven backing. It is only recommended to spot clean with a damp cloth. Do not use any cleaners with bleach or any additives that will alter the color. 

Smooth and Textured Faux Leather

Our smooth and textured faux leather is 1 mm thick. It is sold by the half yard. All vinyl comes pre-cut from our supplier. If you order more than 1 it will come pre-cut in half yards. A half yard is 54" wide by 18" long. It is a soft vinyl with a woven backing. Our smooth faux leather has a smooth surface. It is a sticker faux leather. It's recommended to use a teflon or walking foot. Our textured faux leather has a cross hatch texture on the printed surface. It doesn't have a sticky surface. Our textured faux leather is very easy to sew with. It is only recommended to spot clean with a damp cloth. Do not use any cleaners with bleach or any additives that will alter the color.
